It is a famous question, when we choose VMware for virtualization. Let us learn what is ESX and what is ESXi.
ESX
It has two components
1. Bare metal Hyper visor – Which directly access hardware like OS
2. Service Console – Which is basically a modified Linux
Hyper visor functionality and performance are same in both flavours (ESX and ESXi). The difference is “management Console”. We need Service console to do tasks like scripting, system monitoring and third party tools installation in command prompt. But the issue here is for any security vulnerability of Linux will affect the service console. Hence you will have to do the security patching for service console.
ESXi
It is bare metal hyper visor along with remote management tool capabilities. By just removing the service console ESXi’s foot print reduced dramatically.
Conclusion
Better to deploy ESXi version of VMware for three reasons
1. Less footprint
2. Secured
3. Future major release of VMware will be only ESXi
